The Anthology Project: Exploring the Potential of GPT-4 to Enhance Human Flourishing
Several months ago, I was presented with an exciting opportunity to be a part of an upcoming anthology project. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the capabilities of the GPT-4 large language model in its early access version and share our experiences through short essays. We were given two fundamental questions to explore:
Question 1: How might this technology and its successors contribute to human flourishing?
Question 2: How might we as society best guide the technology to achieve maximal benefits for humanity?
Today, I am pleased to announce that the anthology project is now underway, and a selection of twenty essays, including my own, are being released gradually. You can find the anthology project here.
As part of my own experimentation, I decided to involve GPT-4 in the creation process. Taking on the role of a research mathematician, I requested GPT-4 to produce an essay based on the same prompts I received. Additionally, I provided GPT-4 with my own independently written essay and asked it to either rewrite its own essay in my style or edit mine to enhance its quality. The results were fascinating.
While GPT-4’s output demonstrated competent writing skills and remained relevant to the given topic, it did not exhibit exceptional content. Nevertheless, the experiment shed light on the potential of this technology.
